Photography Exhibitions
Where can you see incredible photography in NYC?
A staple on the consistently rotating lists of “things to do in NYC,” Fotografiska is a must-see museum.
An exhibition worth mentioning is Kia LaBeija’s “prepare my heart.” The show offers an intimate look at the NYC ballroom scene, LaBeija’s exploration of grief following the passing of her mother, and her experience growing up HIV positive.
In an interview with The New York Times, LaBeija spoke about the choice to make her exhibition autobiographical in nature, saying that “my story is not everyone’s story. But it is one.” LaBeija exemplifies the beauty of being queer in a nostalgic, yet simultaneously modern way through the power of photography and archives. The exhibition is available to see through May 8th at Fotografiska.
The Aperture Foundation is a non-profit art organization created by 6 individuals who wanted to establish a media center hold for the arts. Created in 1952, Aperture began as a magazine and has since become a renowned institution. NYC-Arts writes that “Aperture magazine grew along with the medium” of photography, making the name “Aperture” almost synonymous with photography and art lovers in the 20th century.
Today, Aperture has traveling exhibitions that are shown all over the world. While there is not one currently showing in NYC, there will be an exhibition in August titled “Black Is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite”
While you’ll have to add this one to your calendar, based on Aperture’s level of prestige, I’ll say with confidence that this is a show worth seeing.
There are plenty of photo galleries in New York City, all are worth witnessing. These are just a couple of honorable mentions. A whole world of photography is out there, start by finding it in your city!
